For the day that’s in it (Winter Solstice) and as the world doesn’t seem to have ended, thought it might be fitting to celebrate an ancient aspect of Ireland’s history. This photo of a girl at the entrance of Newgrange Passage Tomb in Co. Meath is from our Tempest Collection.
P.S. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for all the hard work and amazingly tireless research, the laughs and the puns/Limericks (beachcomberaustralia!).
Please accept this cartoon from our Prints & Drawings Collection as our Christmas Card to each and every one of you…

If the world does end today – It was nice knowing you all.
By the way – is it GMT or Mexican time I should be worried about?
By the way two – there is no Dog in this Photograph….
The bones of three dogs were found in the chamber of Newgrange during excavations, one each from the east and west chambers and one from just outside the end chamber. It is not known for sure whether these bones are ancient or more modern. It is thought they may have belonged to stray dogs who got into the passage but could not get out again.
If you’re very, very good [http://www.flickr.com/photos/79549245@N06] the first photo of 2013 will have a Dog in the Photograph! 🙂
It looked much nicer 100 years ago…
Today the stones feel a bit plastic…

I just went out and bought a 2013 calendar from a shop that says it sells Mayan stuff.
I’m suspicious. It’s just 12 sheets of blank paper stapled together.

Happy Christmas Carol and everyone!
The term "over-restored" springs to mind.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] Carol – have a great break – Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
And the very same wishes to all of you here – it is great fun and a pleasure to interact with you all.

This photo immediately reminded me of this cartoon by Annie West
Happy Christmas All!
In 1905 – is this the same entrance? – en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bru_na_Boinne_Squire.jpg
Have a look at this OPW page – down near the end – there is a photo of the same girl with her mother….
OPW
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/79549245@N06] That OPW link gives the Wiki image as 1880 – how very confusing!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/eyelightfilms] Over-restored is definitely the term. While Knowth and Dowth are also massively restored, they never feel as Disney-fied as Newgrange. Similar to early photos of Stonehenge, this shot (and the others linked by beachcomberaustralia), demonstrate just how heavily rebuilt Newgrange has been. Pity really. Somehow I think the curators miss the value of the "just discovered" look – in favour of the "as it (might) have looked at the time". Sigh.
Happy hols to Carol and her (cough) "Flickroonies". (We need to work on a more "butch" moniker in the new year 🙂 )
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] I would go with the OPW – wiki says "Entrance to Bru na Boinne, published in ”Celtic Myth and Legend” by Charles Squire (1905), " so it could be 1880 and shown in this book of 1905?
